Graben means moat. This street was filled with water in the middle ages to protest the Roman fortress Vindobona. Than it became the market place and a centre of urban life. Today it is one of the most popular shopping streets in Vienna ending in Kärtner Street which is the liveliest space in Vienna with street artists, musicians, cafes and shops.
