Prater is one of the symbols of Vienna with its Giant Ferris Wheel (67 meters high) constructed by Englishman W. B. Bassett. The park area is almost 10 km, between Danube and the Danube Channel. This area was once the private hunting grounds of the imperial family. The main street, leading to the Fredinand I's Lusthaus (Joy house), is adorned with chestnut trees. After Joseph II had this place opened to the public in 1766 the area became very popular and cafes appeared around the main street where famous musicians like Beethoven and Strauss performed. Today, besides the Giant Ferris Wheel, Prater offers various kinds of games and entertainment both for children and adults.
May the first, the labour day is celebrated in this park every year, and it is a pitty if you wouldn't enjoy a cool drink in Prater during spring and summer in Vienna.
